Kroll Security Group was retained by the University of Chicago to complete a security assessment for its Biological Services Division (BSD), and provide security systems planning, design and implementation services for its Interdivision Research Building (IRB), inclusive of the Animal Research Center (ARC) and several laboratories.
The Biological Sciences Division is one of the institution’s largest divisions employing Academic, Research, Medical, Administrative, Student and other personnel across 18 departments involved in Clinical and Basic Science Research. The BSD occupies 1,081,000 net square feet on campus. 114,000 gross square feet of the BSD space is dedicated to animal research and other ARC operations.
Implementing security measures required for a research and medical facility of the University of Chicago’s visibility and stature presented a number of challenges. Security measures were designed with the concept of Concentric Circles of Protection, which layers increasingly stringent levels of security from perimeter to critical areas.
This design concept was implemented in an unobtrusive manner for general academic areas and progressed to highly strict areas where laboratory and unit segregation was critical to operations and the protection of intellectual and physical property, as well as faculty and staff working on sensitive and groundbreaking projects.
This effort required design and implementation of:
