Smithsonian's National Museum of American History

Washington, D.C.

The National Museum of American History closed its doors to the public in September 2006 to begin a major architectural transformation to focus on three areas of renovation:

  • Architectural enhancements to the museum’s interior
  • Constructing a new gallery for the Star-Spangled banner
  • Updating the buildings 42 year old infrastructure including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and fire and security systems

Kroll Security Group (KSG) was retained by Skidmore Owings & Merrill Architects, to provide security consulting, design and engineering services for this unique renovation.  KSG’s work involved complex programming of interior spaces, creating a new temporarily secure perimeter for use during construction renovations and phased construction activities.

KSG services included design and engineering of new security systems within the renovated space including:

  • Access Control and Alarm Monitoring systems
  • CCTV Surveillance and Recording
  • Security Communications
  • Integration into the Smithsonian’s “Head-end” Enterprise Level
  • Security System
