Mackinac Bridge

Kroll Security Group (KSG) was hired to provide security planning, design, and construction phase services for the Mackinac Bridge. The project involved the design of closed-circuit television and alarm monitoring systems for this five-mile long bridge and associated support buildings. The project also included the design of central monitoring and the control facility.
The closed-circuit television system provides complete coverage of the bridge deck, roadways, and waterways beneath the bridge. The alarm monitoring systems provide intrusion detection at critical points on and beneath the bridge.
Auxiliary systems include audio paging at vehicle waiting areas and on certain portions of the bridge deck. All systems are interconnected using a fiber optic distribution system that includes the use of both single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cable.
Design challenges included the severe weather environment, extreme movement and vibration inherent in the bridge, limited ability to drill or modify the bridge structure, and limited working access to most areas of the bridge.
