John Hancock Center

The John Hancock Center is a 100-story tower, ranks as the eleventh tallest building in the world and is the third tallest in Chicago.  This mixed-use facility includes Class A office space, high profile condominiums, retail, restaurants, and The Hancock Observatory.  The John Hancock Center consists of approximately 2.1 million square feet comprised of:

  • 932,000 square feet of office/retail space
  • 880,000 square feet of residential condominiums
  • 330,000 square feet of parking garage
  • A 21,000 square foot Observatory

Kroll Security Group was retained by John Hancok Property Management in 1993 to provide planning, design and installation management services for the upgrade of base building security systems, in conjunction with a major redesign of the plaza and lobby levels.

Kroll Security Group was retained again under the new property management of Shorenstein Realty Services in 2001 to provide a comprehensive security threat assessment in response to the events of 9/11.   The threat assessment included:

  • Recent terrorist activities and other known methods of attack against high-rise office buildings
  • Adjacency to other high-profile or high-risk facilities
  • Adjacency to critical infrastructures
  • Possibility of introducing hazardous agents such as vehicular bombs, biochemical agents, etc.
