The Internal Revenue Service’s new Kansas City Campus sits on 27.5 acres of land in downtown Kansas City.
Designed in a collaborative effort by BNIM and 360 Architects of Kansas City, the challenge for the design team was to integrate a 660,000 square foot addition onto the existing 475,000 square foot Main Post office. A key component of the long-term business strategy was to have a modern facility that would accommodate changes to work flow, programs and technology.
As the home of nearly 3,000 full-time employees and up to 5,000 seasonal employees the facility was built to provide IRS workers with a comfortable and secure work environment with easy access to amenities. The processing side referred to as the “Pennway Complex” includes an underground parking garage with 3,800 spaces.
Kroll Security Group (KSG) was retained to provide full scope security consulting, design and implementation services. KSG’s design challenges involved providing security to the 5 level underground parking garage with high volume traffic flows and limited access points as well as security zone partitioning to match the facilities flexibility and space utilization time frames.
