As one of two national biocontainment laboratories awarded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease / National Institutes of Health (NIAID/NIH), the Galveston National Laboratory (GNL) will provide much needed research space to develop therapies, vaccines and tests for microbes that might be used as bioterrorism weapons, as well as naturally occurring diseases such as SARS and West Nile encephalitis.
With 160,000 total square feet of space, the GNL has been designed to serve as a national resource, and will complement and enhance The University of Texas Medical Branch's (UTMB) decades of prominence in biomedical research - as well as provide a world renowned resource for training researchers in infectious diseases.
Kroll Security Group (KSG) prepared a Security System Study / Master Plan for the entire campus of UTMB and recommendations provided in this study were implemented by The University. KSG also evaluated available infant abduction protective system technology for UTMB to be implemented with other facility improvement projects. Following these projects, KSG was selected to be a member of the design team for the Galveston National Laboratory project.
