Experience Music Project (EMP) was designed by Santa Monica, California based Frank O. Gehry and Associates, which was also the architect of the much-publicized Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. The project's associate architect was Seattle-based LMN Architects. The sponsor of the $100 million museum was Paul Allen, a co-founder of software manufacturer Microsoft Corp.
The concept for EMP originated in the early 1990s, when Allen started collecting memorabilia of the late Seattle rock star Jimi Hendrix. He and his sister, Jody Allen Patton, expanded on the original idea for a modest facility that would highlight a single performer. The culmination is an interactive, 140,000 square foot museum that features interactive exhibits.
Kroll Security Group provided security planning, design and installation management services for this high profile project.
